Your muscles need more protein now than they did at 40.

Straight answers

How much protein should you eat after 50?

Older adults typically need more protein than the old 0.8 g/kg guideline, which was set for younger adults. Common ranges for adults 50+ fall around 1.0 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight, depending on activity. Use the calculator above to find your number.

Why do older adults need more protein?

Aging muscle becomes less responsive to protein — an effect called anabolic resistance. It takes more protein to trigger the same muscle-building signal, which is why the standard guideline often falls short for people over 50 who want to stay strong.

What are good high-protein foods for adults over 50?

Whole foods like chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, lentils, and tofu are simple, affordable ways to hit your target. The list above shows ten to start with, and the cheat sheet covers 45.
