A shake is not a health food and it is not a meal. It is a delivery system for 25 to 35 grams of protein on the days real food is going to lose — a travel day, an early gym session, a breakfast that would otherwise be toast.
One thing to get straight before the list. After 50, aging muscle is less responsive to protein — anabolic resistance. Reviews in older adults point to roughly 25 to 40 grams per serving as the amount that reliably switches muscle building on. That is the single most useful filter for this list: if a shake gives you 15 grams, it is a snack, not a protein serving.

Protein grams and protein type are taken from each brand's own product page, linked above. Calories and sugar vary by flavour and package size — check the label on the one in your hand, since several of these brands change the panel between sizes.
How to choose, in four lines
- Dairy sits fine with you? Whey isolate. Highest leucine per gram, and leucine is the trigger that gets harder to pull after 50.
- Dairy is a problem? Pea, or a pea and rice blend. A 2024 trial in older men found whey and pea produced similar muscle protein synthesis when dosed above the RDA — so take a generous scoop, roughly 25 g rather than 20.
- Want one before bed? Casein. A trial in healthy older men found pre-sleep protein raised overnight muscle protein synthesis.
- Collagen? Not for muscle. In that same 2024 trial it came in behind both whey and pea. Do not count it toward your protein target.
When to drink it
Not on a stopwatch. The 30-minute post-workout window was oversold — reviews of the timing research concluded the window is hours wide and that total daily protein is what drives the result. For most people over 50 the highest-value slot is breakfast, because that is where the day's protein usually goes missing.
